DESCRIPTION:														\nA presentation on the current state of earthen regulation within the United States with a focus on challenges and opportunities. Significant time will be spent summarizing current initiatives with promise to reduce the barriers to earth building’s widespread use, as well a opportunities practitioners and members of the public have to influence approval processes. The presentation will have significant content related to the relevance of earthen construction in urban and wildland fire risk areas.\nAIA CEU\nThis presentation examines the current state of earthen building regulation in the United States, highlighting challenges, opportunities, and ongoing initiatives to expand approval and adoption. Participants will learn how earthen construction can be applied safely in urban and wildland fire-risk areas, and how practitioners and the public can influence regulatory processes to promote sustainable, resilient, and affordable building practices.\nPrerequisite Knowledge:None Required.\nHSW Justification:This course addresses Health by promoting safe and non-toxic earthen construction methods; Safety by discussing regulations and strategies for earthen buildings in fire-prone areas; and Welfare by supporting broader access to affordable, sustainable, and resilient housing through informed advocacy and improved building codes.\nLearning Objective 1:Understand the current regulatory landscape for earthen construction in the U.S. and identify key barriers to its adoption.\nLearning Objective 2:Analyze ongoing initiatives and reforms aimed at expanding the safe use of earthen materials in urban and fire-risk areas.\nLearning Objective 3:Evaluate how earthen construction contributes to resilient, sustainable, and affordable building practices.\nLearning Objective 4:Apply strategies for influencing regulatory processes and advancing wider acceptance of earthen architecture.\nBen Loescher is a founding Principal at Loescher Meachem Architects where his work focuses around reuse of existing buildings, high performance workplace design for the film, television and media industries, and innovation in earthen construction. Loescher provides education for earthen building through adobeisnotsoftware, is former Chair of the Earthbuilders’ Guild, the U.S. trade association for earthen construction and a board member for Adobe in Action, a New Mexico based non-profit focused on assisting individuals in creating affordable earthen housing. Loescher’s work currently focuses on the reform of codes and standards for earthen architecture that will allow for its use throughout the United States.\n
