The Spiritual Nature of Dwellings
Under the notion that everything matters, how do we design and build in harmonic relationships utilizing materials in particular dimensions and arrangements that help manifest dwellings as living therapeutic instruments that charge our batteries instead of drain our batteries?
Join LeVan as we explore the “spiritual” nature of dwellings and place, Axis Mundi and the Genius Loci the Romans called it…and how to work in accord with site, materials, design elements etc. and much else we are typically unaware of today in our efforts to reestablish homeland.
LeVan will share some of his findings in Ghana and Burkina Faso West Africa in 1989/90 as part of his Fulbright research studying the Gurunsi people’s cosmological understanding of the world and how it was manifest in the building activity including land purification rites and the intentional construction methods and timings of these elaborate massive earthen architectures and their significance. If time allows he will also offer an evocation/ demonstration for the sanctification of a new building. These are methods and practices utilized in the establishment of Sustainable Settings ranch’s human settlement near Carbondale, Colorado a 244-acre Whole Farm Organism.

Brook LeVan is a self-proclaimed certified generalist mostly in the realm of sustainable human settlement. He is co-founder, visionary, and unbetter half, of Sustainable Settings a Whole Systems Learning Center and working biodynamic ranch now in its 25th year of researching and demonstrating models of a possible healthy future. They do that by designing and building harmonic human settlements in relationship with All of the Life we co-create with. Sustainable Settings is a living laboratory that takes the long-haul risks to try things in order understand what is possible and to ask, “What are we capable of?” As a green design charrette facilitator and whole systems consultant LeVan has worked across the USA, Canada, Europe, Asia, Central and South America with the aim of honoring the unique genius of place and specific cultural ethos in order to harvest the collective imaginations that facilitate optimum design functions. He utilizes a whole perspective that sets the stage for optimum regeneration of human settlements that include the built environment, wild lands, waterways, crops, pastures, and surrounding community, helping land stewards of all kinds to improve their relationships with the land. LeVan is leery of what he knows, as it might get in his way, and feels he is perfectly unqualified for what he does everyday. Flavor, in the broadest sense, is LeVan’s predominate motivator in life and drives his quest for the co-creation of meaning in our built environments.
