The Straus Hemp House began in February 2024 when Darren & Sarah Straus reached out to Healthy Hemp Homes to begin designing their dream hemp home in the foothills of Littleton, CO. They began working with architect, David Milburn, who helped conceptualize the main design plus features that they wanted such as: a sunroom, reading nook, rock tile walkway, and wrap-around deck. But the main feature was the hempcrete itself. Darren and Sarah have always been stewards of the environment, and now they had a chance to build a truly eco-friendly, all organic hemp house.

After design was completed, they hired David’s son, Eric, founder of Healthy Hemp Homes, to build it. Excavation began in September of 2025. A new septic was installed, a well tapped, and foundation began in February. Footers were poured, followed by the walls and slab. Framing began in late March by Dave Kaplan’s talented crew at Elevated Design Build. The house is no simple design — it has a barrel roof, vaulted ceilings, bump-outs, timberframing, wrap-around deck, among other unique items which will provide the structure upon which to pour the hempcrete. The hempcrete is slated to begin in June led by Phelan Dalton’s crew of Hemp Building Co out of Longmont, CO. We’ll be doing a mix of cast-in-place hempcrete in the exterior walls as well as hemp blocks in the interior.

Construction is expected to complete at the end of the year. The end result will likely be a work of art in the green building community, something to inspire future hemp homes throughout the country.
