“Challenges and Rewards In Building a Circular Economy” – Matt Marino, Homeland Hempcrete – AIA CEU

In an ever expanding world we have hit a point where we are more dependent and more vulnerable than ever before. The products (not just in construction) come from thousands of miles away, frequently from overseas. Additionally, the quality of materials continues to go down to fuel rapid growth. In order to address this we need to shift our focus to using the resources we have regionally and locally. When it comes to building, hempcrete is a solution that can be embraced at a local level, empowering and supporting communities, while providing healthier, better performing structures that will stand the test of time.

Matt Marino is co-founder and president at Bismarck, ND-based Homeland Hempcrete, a Structural Hemp-Insulated Panel manufacturing company based in Bismarck, ND. He has an extensive background in operations and has focused most of his career on supply chain efficiencies. Early on when exploring the hemp industry he realized the amazing potential that using industrial hemp in construction could have. He and his wife, Samantha (co-founder) along with their two kids moved back to their ‘Homeland’ of Bismarck, ND in 2018 to found Homeland Hempcrete, and begin the mission of constructing better built homes; Homes that utilized locally-sourced resilient materials, performed better, that would last longer, and that provided a healthy indoor environment for its occupants. This mission is becoming a reality. His focus now is to make hempcrete more accessible, more scalable, and accelerate the adoption of healthy and resilient building materials.
