Strawbale and Natural Building News from France
Straw Bale construction has been evolving in France since 2012 and the publishing of the Straw Bale Building Code, and the creation of a professional training course to implement it, by the RFCP (French Network for Straw Construction). The owner-builder single-family type of building is no longer the only horizon for designers and builders. Office and commercial spaces, wineries, fire station, social housing, theater, and numerous schools have chosen straw bale for its amazing characteristics. Infill and prefab are the common way to go. Load-Bearing and wrapping are the current focus of the Network. We estimate that 10,000 sb buildings have been completed in France. Martin Paquot, member of and former co-secretary of the RFCP, will give us a tour of exemplary strawbale projects and a few others using cob, rammed earth, compressed earth brick, light-clay, hemp (hemp-lime and hemp-clay), etc.
